She Lies Close Blog Tour

So you all may have been wondering where I have been lately. Well, covid, work and homeschooling have really taken up the majority of my time. However, when one the publishers I love to work with asked me to take part of a blog tour there was no way that I was going to not jump at the opportunity. I m very happy to present a guest post by Sharon Doering the author of She Lies Close.

The Shocking Chapter Titles in My Book

By Sharon Doering

While writing She Lies Close, a psychological thriller, I wrote in chapter titles for the sake of organization. I would use a line from the chapter as the title so I could scroll through my manuscript and quickly recall what happened in each chapter. It evolved into a game. (This is my first book, so I wasn’t on a deadline). While I was editing, I would continually change the chapter title, trying to come up with the most frightening or comedic or absurd string of words for the title. This game provided light-hearted intermissions in writing a dark thriller.
From organizational technique to writerly game, the chapter titles ended up as part of my sale’s pitch. I wanted my manuscript to stand out. Were my chapter titles going for shock value? Hell, yeah. I had been writing for twenty years. I was feeling desperate, wondering if I would ever get a book deal. Anything to lure an editor. Once I was offered a contract, I assumed my chapter titles would get deleted. Someone along the way — editor, sales team, publisher — would cut them. No one ever mentioned the chapter titles, so they stayed. Here are a few of them.
Chapter 5 A Game of Hedge-Clipper Tag
Chapter 6 Peace Be With Your Vagina
Chapter 16 Emptying a Bottle of Bleach on Them
Chapter 29 Fuck Lynyrd Skynyrd and their “Free Bird” Nonsense
Chapter 49 Trap the Warm, Struggling Body Inside a Plastic Storage Bin and Fasten the Lid

About Sharon Doering

Sharon Doering lives in the Chicago area with her husband, Marc, their three kids, and a peculiarly civilized dog, Indy. In her other life, she was a science professor, a biotech stock analyst, and a xenotransplantation researcher. She has also been a good waitress, a mediocre bartender, and a terrible maid. Sharon is currently working on her next novel.

She Lies Close, a dark psychological thriller, has already gathered strong early praise, with The Sunday Times bestselling author Samantha Downing describing it as a “cracking debut that should be on your 2020 list!” and New York Times bestselling author Mary Kubica declaring it as “an explosive, darkly comedic psychological thriller with one of the most memorable protagonists”. In the story, recently divorced Grace
Wright moves her two small children into a new house, hoping to start a new life, longing to reset her crippling insomnia, but finds out she’s moved in next door to the only suspect in the kidnapping of six-year-old Ava Boone. Grace becomes obsessed with her menacing neighbor and the family of the missing little girl, and then a body turns up…

SHE LIES CLOSE is available now in the UK and releases on November 10 in the US and Canada.
