Dunbar: A Modern King Lear

Shakespeare, the name itself invokes high school/ college English classes. Snickering as the class is told what taking thy maidenhead means. However, in the last 10 or 15 years there have been some retellings that have been made into movies or books. A few of which I really enjoyed. I was overjoyed this last month to receive an ARC for a retelling of one of my favorite plays written by Shakespeare: King Lear.

Dunbar by Edward ST. Aubyn

Dunbar is a modern retelling of King Lear. Instead of a King trying to break up his kingdom between his daughter’s based on their love for him; Dunbar wants to take a step back from running a multibillion dollar media company only to be hijacked by his oldest and middle daughter.

I don’t want to give too much away in regards to how Dunbar’s plot follow the Original King Lear but I will say this; all the characters in Shakespeare’s King Lear are recognizable and invoke the same type of feeling; whether, it is the empathy you may feel for Florence (Cordelia) or disgust for Meghan (Regan).

I would rate Dunbar with 4 stars for modernizing a story which is timeless.

I throughly recommend Dunbar to anyone who enjoys Shakespeare or even if they don’t a story that is full of deceit, madness and sacrifice.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for an honest review.
